Winter Stream/Drifting
Rowboat (Overturned)
San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery Lot, 1986
Approximately 90 ft long, steel, white cement, landscaping
Winter Stream/Drifting Rowboat (Overturned) is a site-generated installation
that references both the submerged nature of the site and historical evidence
of a stream that once flowed through this area. The piece may be viewed from “water
level” along the northern edge of the site, or from “under-water” by
walking into the piece from the south entrance. The “water level” of
the piece and suspension of the overturned rowboat image is articulated by
a strata of fragmentary plates that may be interpreted as an “ice flow,” referencing
the Pleistocene ice ages in Northern California.
Commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
